After a great battle between deities fractured the pillars of Heaven, it was NüWa who restored them. Smelting together five colourful stones representing the elements, she filled the fracture in the sky and saved humanity from devastation. Revered as the protector of life, the legendary figure of NüWa remains a favourite subject for Chinese artists.
